‘Vanvaas’ – 365 days in Silent valley

Beginning on the 6th of December 2006, Jayan along with Mari the forest guard trekked the forests of the Silent Valley till 7th of December 2007, walking 10-30 km everyday, capturing its life in thousands of photographs along the way. He stayed in the forest for a complete 365 days.

His camera and a wireless set is what all he had as means of survival in his jungle stay. A born lover of the Nature and the Wild, this was Jayan’s way of advocating for the ‘Save Silent Valley Campaign’ which was revitalized in 2007, after the Government of Kerala sanctioned about 250 crore rupees for the Pathrakkadavu Hydroelectric Project (PHEP). Shri.A.Sujanapal , the then Minister of Forests, Government of Kerala, along with Shri.Vallil Gopinath IFS was instrumental in immediately sanctioning the self motivated Photographer permission to stay in the evergreen forests for 365 days.

Shri. M.Vimal, who was the range officer of the Silent Valley Range at that time provided Jayan his wholehearted support . The Department of Forests and the forest guards of Silent Valley provided ambient support. Renowned ornithologist and Environmentalist Shri.P.K.Uthaman visited Jayan and Mari every month to brief their work and to provide guidance. With no sponsors to support the cause, it was Shri.Jayan’s family that provided him all the support to complete his mission.
